Calcium Nitrate Dosing Systems in Depth

What is Calcium Nitrate Chemical Dosing?

Calcium nitrate is used in chemical dosing to minimise industrial odours by up to 90%, by preventing wastewater from becoming septic. One great advantage of calcium nitrate dosing systems is that they are biologically friendly and non-hazardous, while still being effective at odour and corrosion control.

What are Calcium Nitrate Dosing Systems?

Calcium Systems Main Support2These systems range in size from 500L to 25,000L and include:

  • Dosing Pump
  • Programmable PLC Control
  • High/Low Pressure Cut Out
  • SMS Alarm
  • Anti-Syphoning Protection
  • Calibration Cylinder
  • Popular choice for odour control at pump stations in wastewater systems
  • Level of H₂S odour is minimised from dosing point and downstream
  • Reduces H₂S production by up to 90%
  • Lessens the rate of corrosion for system infrastructure by excess H₂S gas
  • Allows Work Health and Safety (WHS) Regulation compliance
  • Environmentally friendly

Calcium nitrate dosing systems are often applied at municipal wastewater and industrial water treatment facilities. These dosing systems can be built inside a shipping container, for easy transport and short-term dosing. You could also choose to secure your dosing system with a fenced compound, metal-clad enclosure or a concrete hut enclosure.

The calcium nitrate tanks are made from PE. For maximum worker safety and minimum environmental impact, a bunded unloading area is suggested.

How does Calcium Nitrate Work in Wastewater Facilities?

In untreated wastewater, there are bacteria that cause a chemical reaction producing active sulphides in solution. Hydrogen molecules bond with these sulphides to form odorous H₂S gas. The nitrates in the chemical dosing solution provide an alternative oxygen source which disrupts the formation of H₂S. Lower concentrations of H₂S mean reduced odour, less corrosion to assets and compliance with WHS regulations.

Chemical Dosing Systems and Alternative Odour Control Strategies

Below are some alternative odour control measures, compared with calcium nitrate dosing systems:

Chemical Absorption
(Chemical Wet Scrubbing)
Bio-scrubbers
(Bio-oxidation using inorganic media)
Biofiltration
(Bio-oxidation using organic media)
Chemical Dosing (Calcium Nitrate)
Good choice for reducing high H₂S levels at headworks and sludge facilities Use inorganic compounds to effectively remove moderate to high levels of H₂S Best for treating a mixture of odorous organic compounds Reduces H₂S gas by up to 90%, reducing corrosion and increasing asset life
Can be effective at ammonia removal at sites such as composting facilities Best suited for use at wastewater treatment plants Can treat low levels of H₂S Good choice for wastewater systems, prevents septic conditions
High maintenance needs restrict best applications to manned wastewater plants Not recommended for low or variable H₂S levels Not recommended for high or variable levels of H₂S Requires supply of chemical agent*

*Although calcium nitrate systems do require a continuous supply of chemicals, this can be conveniently and safely managed with OdourPro’s chemical delivery service.
